Construction Details of an Autoradiographic-Based Rat Brain Phantom for Emission Tomography

چکیده
A digital brain phantom was created from rat brain autoradiographic (AR) data for use in emission computed tomography studies. The animal tissue was radio-labeled with [C]-2-deoxyglucose, a functional analog of the PET agent [F]-fluoro-deoxyglucose. Following sacrifice of the animal, serial tissue sections were cut at 20 m thickness, digitized, and calibrated to represent the ground truth 2D relative spatial distribution of radionuclide within the tissue. A 3D representation was achieved by digital alignment of the serial AR images to corresponding video blockface images acquired at the time of cutting. In addition, a magnetic resonance data set was co-registered to the AR and blockface data using the AIR algorithm. This paper is concerned with outlining the details of construction for this phantom.

Background-Based Delineation of Internal Tumor Volumes on Static Positron Emission Tomography in a Phantom Study
Objective(s): Considering the fact that the standardized uptake value (SUV) of a normal lung tissue is expressed as x±SD, x+3×SD could be considered as the threshold value to outline the internal tumor volume (ITV) of a lung neoplasm. Methods: Three hollow models were filled with 55.0 kBq/mL fluorine18- fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) to represent tumors. The models were fixed to a barrel filled w...

Besides the newly developed positron emission tomography scanners (microPET) dedicated to the in vivo functional study of small animals, autoradiography remains the reference technique widely used for functional brain imaging and the gold standard for the validation of in vivo results. The analysis of autoradiographic data is classically achieved in two dimensions (2D) using a section-by-sectio...
